Benefits For Students
FFA students will learn the importance of farm safety and the related contribution of farm emergency response maps. In addition, students will become skilled in the use geospatial technologies, such as global positioning systems (GPS) and geographic information systems (GIS), in the development of the farm emergency response maps.
Why is GIS Important?
Geospatial technology is a growing market with excellent potential for employment. According to the U.S. Geological Survey and U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, "increasing demand for readily available, consistent, accurate, complete, and current geographic information and the widespread availability and use of advanced technologies offer great job opportunities for people with many different talents and educational backgrounds".... read more about GIS and Geospatial Technology.
Why is a Farm Emergency Response Map Important?
A farm emergency response map provides added protection for a farmer in the event of an emergency, such as a fire. Livestock and other valuable assets will be better protected if local emergency responders know locations and types of hazards, such as agricultural chemicals.
A Farm Emergency Response Map provides the following:
- Added protection for a farmer in the event of an emergency, such as a fire
- Improved effectiveness of emergency response in protecting farm assets
- Knowledge of potential hazards on a farm early in the response can avoid unnecessary loss of human life and reduce dangers.
