Why is a Farm Emergency Response Map Important?

  1. Added protection for a farmer in the event of an emergency, such as a fire
  2. Improved effectiveness of emergency response in protecting farm assets
  3. Knowledge of potential hazards on a farm early in the response can avoid unnecessary loss of human life and reduce dangers.

Students visit farms and record key safety features on the farm. This information is then translated into a GIS which is used to create a farm emergency response map.

WHAT IS A Farm Safety Map?

A Farm Emergency Response Map contains information about hazards and important assets that emergency response personnel need to know in the event of an emergency, such as fuel storage locations, gas shutoffs, chemical storage sites, septic systems and more. See an example of a Farm Emergency Response Map below.

Is it important to note that a Farm Emergency Response Map is PRIVATE! The information is only shared with the first responders when necessary and only with the permission of the farmer!

Who can access this information? It's up to the landowner who has access to this information. It will not be distributed to ANYONE under any circumstances unless the landowner provides approval! Learn more.
